Gallatin native Josh McKenzie of McKenzie Jewlers grows the world's largest Boston Ferns. The fern duo reach an astounding five feet in height and measure at least 4.5 feet in width. McKenzie displays the massive beasts outside the Gallatin jewler's location off Nashville Pike, beside the Publix
shopping center. Josh's parents opened McKenzie Jewlers back in the early 80's.
"I water them every morning with two gallons of water, " explains McKenzie. Some extremely hot Gallatin days require a seond watering in the evening before closing up shop. McKenzie also fertilizes them with 4 TBSPs of standard Miracle Gro once per week. The ferns, purchased in 2013 from nearby Roger's nursery,, definitely appreciate Josh's efforts. Their mighty manes flow in the wind with macho confidence. It's very Fabio-esque.
Each fall, before the first freeze, McKenzie brings in the Boston ferns. "I've had to repot them 3 times," he admits. The repotting was of course due to new growth and the root-bounding that accompanies it.
As an interior designer, I understand that plants have the capabilities to transform both indoor and outdoor spaces. I, however, often neglect my plants. It takes a level of dedication to daily take care of living things!
However, you won't find a dead leaf or anything scragily on these ferns—just complete health with lots of new growth. I am in awe and they are truly a Sumner County treasure, as is the McKenzie family who has been a staple in our community for decades.
The ferns sit outside all summer long. I noticed them when eating at the nearby Mexican restaurant. I had to know more!
As fall approaches, McKenzie will bring these beauties in for another cold season. "They do shed a lot inside," McKenzie explains. The store's large front windows provide the ferns with a happy winter experience.
